On April 15, 2023, BIÉDE staged its first fashion show and performance, “BIÉDE IN MOTION,” at node hotel Kyoto. It opened the label's first Kansai pop-up exhibition, “BIÉDE COLLECTION IN COLLABORATION WITH Quentin Shih at node hotel, Kyoto,” held from April 15 to 30.

The performance was part of the KG＋2023 programme. Rather than placing clothing and products as still exhibits, BIÉDE brought them into a relation between body, voice, music and scent.
Placing Umegae in the present
The point of departure was Umegae, chapter 32 of Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji. The work did not reconstruct a classical scene. It asked what kind of performance might emerge if Umegae were placed in contemporary society. Following the scent and flute in the story, ELEMENT 21《32 UMEGAE》INCENSE was burned in the space, while Hana Yamamoto played flute before the performance.

Opening flute performance by Hana Yamamoto
Before BIÉDE IN MOTION, Yamamoto performed music inspired by the flute in Umegae. Walking through the space and at moments moving as if in a waltz, she played Erik Satie's “Je te veux” and Claude Debussy's “Syrinx.”
