In September 2020, TOKION published an email interview with photographer and film director Quentin Shih for the presentation of BIÉDE COLLECTION 01. The conversation moves from the construction of the shoot to light and colour, memory, photography in China and Japanese photographers.

Between East and West, dream and reality
After reading BIÉDE's collection story, Shih imagined scenes between East and West, dream and reality: nowhere, yet possible anywhere. He photographed in a Chinese apartment and by the sea, bringing together minimal bags, lustrous clothing and unisex models.

On BIÉDE
Asked about the genderless, the borderless and a new uniform, Shih described BIÉDE as simple in form but made for people with complicated minds.
For me, BIÉDE is a simple brand but for people with complicated minds. It’s a style of futurism, emotionless and very frigid. That’s very cool.
— Quentin Shih
Light, colour and memory
For Shih, light and colour are a strong visual language. He compares taking a photograph to waking a memory held deep in the mind: travelling into the past to meet people and places already known. The interview also touches on photography in China and Daido Moriyama, Kishin Shinoyama, Yoshihiko Ueda and Rinko Kawauchi.
